MedExpress Urgent Care, a walk-in neighborhood health care provider, is sponsoring two Girls on the Run 5K races on Dec. 1.
The MedExpress Girls on the Run Candy Cane 5K Dash will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Baker Park in Frederick; and the Washington County 5K will be at 12:30 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School in Hagerstown. A combined 1,500 runners are expected to participate.
Both 5K events are open to the public. Online registration for both races is available at www.candycanedash.org and is open until Nov. 27. On-site registration is also available prior to both races.
Registration is $35 and includes a long-sleeve shirt and finishing medal. Registration for accompanying 1K races is $15 and includes a participation medal that doubles as a Christmas ornament. Family discounts are also available: $95 for 4-6 people registering from the same household.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based youth development program that prepares third-to-eighth grade girls to run a 5K. Volunteer-led teams meet twice a week throughout the season and participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and establish life-long healthy habits.
“The positive impact this program has on girls, their families, coaches and our community has a ripple effect that goes way beyond the season,” said Leah Perry, council director of Girls on the Run Mid & Western Maryland. “It truly is transformational and so much fun.”
The program takes place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and has been benefitting girls for over 20 years. Girls on the Run is the largest 5K series in the U.S. by number of events with over 330 events across the country last year.
